About YKYH Picks

In short: YKYH Picks is an independent directory of 12,225 macOS apps and command-line tools. It is built from the public Homebrew catalogue, refreshed by the deployment pipeline, and never hosts or mirrors installers.

What this site is

YKYH Picks answers one question: which Mac app should I install, and what is the exact command? Every app page states the package type, category, latest version, licence, architecture, dependencies and 30-day Homebrew install count. Every install command is copied from the package metadata, so it can be run as written.

What this site is not

  • It is not a download site. Binaries are never hosted or mirrored here; every download points at the vendor's own release.
  • It is not a hands-on review site. Automated copy is limited to facts that are true by construction. Recommendations on comparison pages are derived only from published attributes, not from subjective testing.
  • It is not affiliated with Apple, Homebrew or any vendor listed in the catalogue.

Data sources

Names, descriptions, versions, licences and dependencies come from the public formulae.brew.sh JSON API. Install counts come from Homebrew's opt-in analytics endpoint. The 30-day figure is used for ranking; the 365-day figure is used only to compute a recent-versus-historical adoption ratio.

Editorial rules

  1. No invented facts. If Homebrew does not declare a licence, the page says "Not declared" rather than guessing "proprietary".
  2. No paid placement. Ordering is by 30-day install count unless a page is explicitly a hand-curated collection.
  3. Head-to-head comparisons come from a hand-maintained list. Automatic pairing is not used for /vs/ pages.
  4. Open-source status is a claim about provenance. It is only marked "Yes" when Homebrew metadata links a source repository; a download mirror is labelled "inferred".

Corrections and freshness

The catalogue is regenerated from the cached Homebrew JSON on every build; the deployment pipeline refreshes that cache first. When upstream corrects a name, version or licence, the next build picks it up. The date at the bottom of each page is the build date.
